Ingannevolmente pacifica, Caborca si erge lungo gli argini del Río Conception nel cuore di una stupefacente e fertile pianura nel Gran Deserto ovest di Sonora. Lo stesso Padre Kino fu impressionato dalle sue potenzialità ed incominciò a costruirvi una missione nel 1693. 
La chiesa attuale venne costruita tra il 1803 ed il 1809. Essa mostra parecchie similitudini con San Xavier del Bac. A nord della chiesa si ergeva un convento, ma le terribili inondazioni all’inizio del 20° secolo si riversarono sulla costruzione ed erosero tra l’altro la sacrestia ed il retro del santuario. Il governo messicano da allora ha restaurato la chiesa e l’ha dichiarata monumento nazionale. 
Una nuova piazza è stata creata davanti alla chiesa nel 1967. La piccola arcata che serve come entrata principale alla piazza venne costruita con le pietre della facciata di un’antica cappella della città di Batuc che venne inondata dalle acque della diga El Novillo sul Río Yaqui. Nel 1997 la piazza è stata ampliata notevolmente. 

Deceptively peaceful, Caborca rises along the banks of the Río Concepción at the heart of an amazingly fertile plain in the great western desert of Sonora.  Padre Kino himself was impressed by its potential and began constructing a new mission here in 1693.
The present church was built between 1803 and 1809.  It shows many architectural similarities to San Xavier del Bac.  A large convento once stood to the north of the church but raging floods in the early 20th century ripped into this construction and also eroded away the sacristy and rear of the sanctuary; it happened again in the 1980s.  The Mexican government has since restored the church and made it a national monument. 
A new plaza was created in front of the church in 1967.  The small archway which serves as the formal entrance to the plaza was made from the stone facade of an ancient chapel in the town of Batuc which has been inundated by the waters of El Novillo dam on the Río Yaqui.
